Reviews the book, Trauma and Race: A Lacanian Study of African American Racial Identity by Sheldon George (2016). With this book, George takes up the task of using Lacanian theory to explicate the workings of race in contemporary America. Although bracketed within a fairly densely argued exposition of Lacanian theory, George's book is important and is deserving of close study. It is a valuable work that lays a foundation for psychoanalysts to theorize racial injustice and to assist in constructing a counternarrative that can contribute to pushing back against the resurgence of White supremacy as a master signifier in the United States today. It is urgent work to which psychoanalysts should be prepared to contribute. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
