This article illustrates the application of a new assessment and conceptualization model, the Balanced Diagnostic Impressions (DICE-PM; i.e., Diagnosis, Individual Strengths and Weaknesses, Cultural Assets and Struggles, Environmental Resources and Deficits, Physical Wellness and Health Concerns, and Mental Health Category) Model. The DICE-PM Model is guided by positive psychological principles and models and seeks to address concerns related to exclusively focusing on weaknesses and a lack of a cultural focus in diagnostic processes. Included in this article is the rationale for the importance of positive psychological alternatives when assessing and conceptualizing clients. An argument presenting how focusing on pathology is limiting to diagnosis highlights the need for the DICE-PM Model. Individual strengths, environmental resources, and cultural assets are key and unique to this balanced approach. Additionally, the gap in positive psychological assessment literature related to cultural considerations is addressed, which includes the call for practitioners to approach clinical work in a culturally competent and inclusive manner. Two case examples are provided, highlighting the implementation of the DICE-PM Model. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
