The APA Awards for Distinguished Scientific Early Career Contributions to Psychology recognize psychologists who have demonstrated excellence early in their careers and have held a doctoral degree for no more than 9 years. One of the 2018 award winners is Donald Edmondson, “for his theoretical work describing how life-threatening medical events sensitize patients to threats from the body, and for providing compelling evidence that psychological responses to such events may hasten mortality.” He has has elegantly synthesized cognitive models of posttraumatic stress with existential psychological theory to develop his enduring somatic threat model, which yields counterintuitive insights.
